Edging Tape: Finishing a Cut Panel Edge Properly

Every panel you cut leaves a raw board edge, and a raw edge in a kitchen is where water gets in. This guide covers pre-glued and un-glued tape, the ironing method, and how to trim an edge so it looks like it came that way.

Why a cut edge has to be covered

It is not only about looks. An exposed board edge is the way water gets into a panel.

Panels, plinths and trims are a decorative face bonded to a board core. The faces and the factory edges are sealed; a cut edge is not. Left bare in a kitchen, that edge will take up moisture from mopping, spills and steam, and a swollen edge cannot be repaired — the panel has to be replaced.

Edging tape closes it. It takes a few minutes per edge and it is the difference between a panel that lasts and one that lifts along the bottom in two winters.

Pre-glued or un-glued: pick before you order

Pre-glued (iron-on)
Heat-activated adhesive already on the back. Applied with a household iron. The right choice for almost every DIY job.
Un-glued (veneer)
No adhesive. Needs contact adhesive applied to both surfaces. Used where an iron cannot reach or where a stronger bond is wanted.

22mm — enough to cover an 18mm, 19mm or 22mm board edge with a little to trim off each side.

Applying pre-glued tape

Prepare the edge

The edge must be flat, dry and free of dust. Knock off any saw fuzz with fine abrasive along the length of the edge — not across it — and wipe it clean. Tape will not bridge a ragged edge; it will telegraph every lump.

Cut the tape long

Cut a piece 20–30mm longer than the edge at each end. You will trim the overhang off afterwards and it is far easier than trying to place a piece cut exactly to length.

Set the iron to medium, no steam

A domestic iron on a medium setting is right — hot enough to melt the adhesive, not so hot it scorches the decorative face. Turn the steam off. Water is the one thing you are trying to keep out of this edge.

Iron slowly along the length

Hold the tape centred on the edge with a slight overhang each side. Run the iron along it steadily rather than pressing in one spot. You are looking for the adhesive to melt evenly along the whole run, not to cook one section.

Press it down with a block while it is still warm

Immediately after the iron, run a smooth block of wood firmly along the tape. This is the step people skip and it is the one that makes the bond. Pressing while the glue is molten beds the tape down; letting it cool untouched gives you a tape that lifts at the ends in a month.

Trim the long edges

Once cool, trim the overhang. A proper edge trimmer does both sides cleanly in one pass. Failing that, use a sharp chisel bevel-down or a fresh knife blade, working with the grain of the panel face and taking small cuts. Always cut away from the decorative face.

Ease the corners

Take the sharpness off the two long arrises with fine abrasive on a block, held at about 45° and moving along the edge. It removes the last of the overhang, kills the sharp line that catches on clothing, and is what makes a site-taped edge read as factory.

Applying un-glued tape

Coat both surfaces

Contact adhesive goes on the board edge and on the back of the tape. Both faces, thin and even.

Let it go touch-dry before you join them

Contact adhesive bonds when two dry, coated surfaces meet — not when they are wet. Follow the adhesive's own timing. Joining them wet gives a bond that never fully hardens.

Place it once

Contact adhesive grabs instantly and does not slide. Line the tape up along its whole length before any part of it touches, then lay it down from one end. There is no second attempt — this is why pre-glued is the better choice for most jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a hair dryer or a heat gun instead of an iron?

A hair dryer rarely gets hot enough to melt the adhesive properly. A heat gun gets far too hot and will blister the decorative face before the glue flows. An ordinary household iron on a medium dry setting is genuinely the right tool.

How much edging tape do I need?

Add up the length of every cut edge you intend to cover, then add about 10% for trimming and mistakes. Remember that a single panel scribed to a wall may only need one edge taped, not all four — the factory edges are already finished.

Will the tape match my doors exactly?

It is made to match the range, and on most finishes the result is indistinguishable once trimmed and eased. On very high-gloss finishes a tape edge can catch the light slightly differently from a factory edge, so where you have the choice, put taped edges where they are least on show.

Do I need to tape the edge that faces the wall?

For appearance, no. For protection, it is still worth sealing — that edge often sits closest to a floor that gets mopped. If you would rather not use tape there, a wipe of PVA sealing the core does the important part of the job.

The tape is wider than my panel edge. Is that wrong?

No, that is how it is meant to be. 22mm tape on an 18mm edge gives you 2mm of overhang each side to trim off, which is what lets you get a flush edge without a visible line of bare board where the tape ran slightly off centre.
